Hi, I’m Melissa

MEET YOUR THERAPIST IN VIRGINIA

Education & Training

I’m a licensed professional counselor and therapist in Virginia. With a Masters of Education in counseling from Virginia Tech, I’m a proud Hokie.

My clinical mental health experience runs the gamut from counseling college students to leading groups in a substance abuse clinic to counseling individuals in private practice.

Specialties

I specialize in the treatment of trauma, life transitions, stress, grief, and anxiety-related disorders. I love individual sessions and also the processes inherent in group therapy. Most of all, I’m honored to witness the changes my clients make in their lives when they commit to the process of counseling.

Tools That Honor Your Entire Self

Some of the modalities that you’ll become familiar with through our work together include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused-Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR). I also incorporate mindfulness and somatic experiencing tools to help you process the totality of your human experience.

Connecting You to Your Authentic Truth

I believe that all good counseling is spiritual in nature. No matter what evidence-based modality we use, the therapeutic process deepens your connection to your core Self. After counseling sessions with me, you will feel more whole, more connected, more grounded, and more like your Self.

You will feel home.

How It All Started

WHY I LOVE THIS JOB

I entered this field after experiencing firsthand how difficult it can be to find the right mental health support. When my family needed help, we waited months to connect with the right clinicians. That experience led me to pursue my Masters of Education in Counseling—and I’m grateful now that I can be part of the solution.

I’m passionate about nurturing your mental health and wellness through deeply personalized treatment. My approach considers all of who you are—your mind, body, and spirit—as we work together to understand what has brought you to this moment. Sometimes this journey includes connecting you with other caring specialists, like psychiatrists, nutritionists, or acupuncturists, who can support different aspects of your healing.

I'm honored to provide evidence-based and integrative care that helps you flourish as your truest Self—because I've witnessed how beautifully counseling can change lives.

Common Questions
  • Great questions to ask include:

    • What’s your experience with my specific concerns?

    • What therapeutic approaches do you use?

    • How do you measure progress?

    • What does a typical session look like?

    • How do you handle communication between sessions?

Also, don’t forget to ask about practical matters like scheduling, fees, and their cancellation policy. Trust your gut about whether you feel comfortable and understood during the conversation.

  • Start by identifying what you want to work on—such as trauma, anxiety, relationships, or life transitions. Look for therapists who specialize in your specific concerns and check their credentials and training. Read their website to get a sense of their approach and personality. Many therapists offer brief consultations, which can help you determine if their style feels like a good match before committing to regular sessions.

    Schedule a 15-minute Consultation

  • Create a private, comfortable space where you won’t be interrupted, and test your technology beforehand. Be honest and open—online therapy works just as effectively as in-person sessions when you’re willing to engage fully. Come prepared with topics you want to discuss, practice any exercises or techniques between sessions, and don’t hesitate to share if something isn't working. The key is treating your virtual sessions with the same commitment you would give to in-person appointments.
