Our first official appointment is an intake session, where we discuss your clinical, familial, relational, and developmental history. We review present symptoms and define treatment goals for our work together.Commit to change.
Individual therapy clients begin with weekly, 50-minute appointments. After 12 weeks, many clients change to biweekly or monthly sessions for ongoing maintenance.
Individual Therapy Creates Profound Shifts
Individual therapy helps you work through major life transitions, as well as everyday challenges. That includes relationship struggles, career changes, parenting stress, anxiety, grief, depression, and past experiences that still affect you today. Individual therapy is also beneficial if you're generally doing okay, but feel stuck in some way, unmotivated, or like something's just “off.”
How to Choose Treatment Goals and Objectives
Your treatment goals and objectives should feel personally meaningful to you—not what others think you should work on. To find clarity, ask yourself: “What would make the biggest difference in my daily life right now?” Maybe it’s waking up without dread, feeling more confident socially, or finally addressing something you've been avoiding.
Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they want to change, while others need time to explore what matters most. Together, we’ll identify what truly matters to you and create achievable steps toward those goals.

Questions & Answers
Some Things You May Be Wondering About…
-
First session: This is a diagnostic assessment. We’ll discuss your patient history and goals for therapy, so we can come up with a plan for our work together.
Ongoing sessions: You’ll commit to showing up and doing the inner work—honestly looking at patterns and taking responsibility for your growth. I’ll bring my expertise, support, and compassion, while promising to challenge you when you need it most.
Active participation: If we’re a good fit, participation tends to happen naturally—I find that my patients are generally ready to do the work.

Individual relationship counseling focuses on your role and patterns within relationships—whether romantic, family, or friendships—but you work on these issues alone rather than with your partner. This approach allows you to explore your attachment style, communication patterns, and relationship history. You identify behaviors that might be creating challenges and develop healthier ways of connecting with others. It’s particularly helpful when your partner isn’t ready for couples therapy, or when you want to work on yourself first before addressing relationship issues together.

Every person's journey is unique, but many clients begin noticing positive changes within the first few sessions. Some people experience relief simply from having a safe space to be heard and understood. Factors that influence progress include your specific goals, the challenges you’re addressing, and your level of engagement in the process.

Yes. You can speak freely about your thoughts, feelings, relationships, and experiences without worrying about judgment or your privacy being violated. Virginia law protects all communications between you and your counselor, and nothing is shared without your written permission.
There are three important exceptions, which exist solely to protect you and others from serious harm:
Child or elder abuse: I’m legally required to report suspected abuse to protect vulnerable individuals.
Threat to others: If you threaten to seriously harm someone else, I must notify authorities.
Threat to yourself: If you’re planning to harm yourself, I’ll work with you to ensure your safety and may need to involve additional support, if necessary.
